Builder Sans is the current answer — plus the Gotham era players still remember, and the Comic Sans claim that refuses to die.
Roblox uses Builder Sans, an in-house geometric sans-serif rolled out starting April 2024. It now covers the app interface, the website, the Creator Hub, and in-game UI elements. Builder Sans replaced Gotham ScreenSmart (Gotham SSm) and Arial, which Roblox deprecated from Studio by late May 2024 — any experience still referencing the old fonts gets them auto-substituted (Gotham → Montserrat, Arial → Arimo).
Roblox built Builder Sans itself specifically to stop depending on third-party licensed typefaces, which is the same reason gg sans exists for Discord and Builder Sans exists for Roblox — owning the font gives full control over glyph coverage and licensing.
Roblox's logo and its interface/body text have taken separate paths, and mixing them up is where most "what font does Roblox use" confusion starts:
Logo: a plain Arial wordmark at launch (2004) → a custom-designed logo (2008–2016) → the current mark since 2017, a modified Gill Sans Ultra Bold with the "O" squared off.
Interface / body text: before 2017, there's no publicly documented font name — this is the era people mean when they ask about the "old Roblox font" (see below). 2017–2019: Source Sans Pro. 2019–April 2024: Gotham ScreenSmart. April 2024–present: Builder Sans.
There's no official record of the exact typeface Roblox used for in-game text before its 2017 redesign. What's real is the belief: it's a recurring claim among longtime players and on Roblox's own Developer Forum that the earliest look was Comic Sans MS. Roblox has never confirmed this, and Comic Sans MS is a separately licensed Microsoft font Roblox never officially shipped — which is exactly why Roblox Studio ships "Legacy" and "Cartoon" as built-in enum fonts. Developers on the forum describe Cartoon as close enough to Comic Sans "as if it's the exact same font under a different name," which is the practical reason those two options exist: a licensing-safe way to approximate that early, rounded look without Roblox needing to license Comic Sans MS itself.
No. Builder Sans is proprietary and built in-house — it isn't released as a public download. The earlier Gotham ScreenSmart was commercially licensed to Roblox by its foundry, not owned or redistributed by Roblox, so it was never available to download either.
Builder Sans is the typeface Roblox's own interface is drawn in — you can't select it, and it has nothing to do with how your display name or bio looks. The bold, gothic, cursive, bubble, or small-caps text players paste into a Roblox display name, group description, or bio is made of separate Unicode characters, not a font setting. That's why it looks the same no matter which UI font Roblox happens to be running that year — and why it works today exactly as it did in the Gotham era.
