Old Roblox Font Generator

Type a name or phrase and render it in the closest free fonts to the old Roblox look — the pre-2017 chat text and the 2008-era logo style — then download it as a PNG or SVG. Everything runs in your browser. And an honest note up front: these are free-font stand-ins, because the real old font was never named or released.

Up to 4 lines — each line is centered.

An honest nostalgia generator

There is no real "old Roblox font" file to give you — Roblox never named or released the pre-2017 text font, and the 2008–2016 logo was hand-drawn lettering with no typeface behind it. So this generator does the honest version of the job: it renders your text in two free Google Fonts chosen as the closest visual stand-ins — Comic Neue for the Comic Sans-style chat text players remember, and Baloo 2 as a bold, rounded homage to the 2008-era logo — and exports the result as a PNG or SVG image you can use anywhere.

Not the authentic font. Both presets are free-font approximations of a nostalgic look. Nothing on this page is, or claims to be, the historical Roblox font or logo lettering — see the full story below.

The three things "old Roblox font" can mean

Mixing these up is where most confusion about the old Roblox font starts, so it's worth separating them before generating anything:

1. The old in-game / chat text — the rounded, cartoonish text of the pre-2017 client. This is the nostalgia most searches are about, and it has no officially documented font name. The 2008 Chat Text preset above approximates it.

2. The old logo — the 2008–2016 wordmark. A separate design history from the interface text, with its own answer. The Old Logo Style preset above is a stylistic homage to it.

3. The old website font — for most people asking today, this means the look before Builder Sans rolled out in April 2024, which was Gotham ScreenSmart.

The pre-2017 in-game text: was it Comic Sans?

Nobody outside Roblox can say for sure. There's no official record of the typeface used for in-game text before the 2017 redesign — no blog post, no documentation, no press mention. What exists instead is a remarkably durable community belief: longtime players and posters on Roblox's own Developer Forum have claimed for years that the early text was Comic Sans MS. Roblox has never confirmed it, and Comic Sans MS is a separately licensed Microsoft font that Roblox never officially shipped.

That belief is exactly why the chat-text preset uses Comic Neue: a genuinely free, open-source typeface designed as a cleaner take on the Comic Sans style. It gets you the remembered look without pretending to be a font nobody can verify — and without touching Microsoft's licensed original.

The licensing point also explains Roblox's own solution. Roblox Studio includes "Legacy" and "Cartoon" as built-in enum fonts — developers on the forum describe Cartoon as close enough to Comic Sans "as if it's the exact same font under a different name." If you're building an experience and want your in-game text to look like old Roblox, setting a text object's font to Legacy or Cartoon in Studio is the official, licensing-safe route, no font file required.

The old Roblox logo font (2008–2016)

The logo's history is separate from the interface text, and it's the one part of "old Roblox font" with concrete answers:

2004: the original wordmark was set in plain Arial — the only era of the Roblox logo that maps to a named font you can actually use.

2008–2016: the logo everyone means by "old Roblox 2008 font" was a custom design — lettering drawn for Roblox, not typed in a published typeface. There is no font name to look up, because it never was one.

2017–present: the current mark is a modified Gill Sans Ultra Bold with the "O" squared off.

Because the 2008–2016 lettering was never a typeface, no font — free or paid — can recreate it. The Old Logo Style preset uses Baloo 2, a bold, rounded, playful free font, purely as a visual homage to that era's feel. If you've seen "Old Roblox" font files floating around free-font sites: those are fan-made recreations built by tracing the logo — not anything Roblox released.

What about the old Roblox website font?

Recent nostalgia usually means the pre-2024 look. The Roblox website and app ran on Gotham ScreenSmart (Gotham SSm) from 2019 until April 2024, when Builder Sans replaced it — a change some players disliked enough that unofficial browser extensions exist to re-skin the site with the older font. Those are third-party tools, they only change what you see, and they're worth treating with the usual caution around unofficial add-ons.

Before Gotham, the site used Source Sans Pro (roughly 2017–2019). And before the 2017 redesign, the website font — like the in-game text — was never officially documented.

Can you download the old Roblox font?

No — there's no official download, and there never was one. The pre-2017 text font was never named or released by Roblox. If the community belief is right and it was Comic Sans MS, then the font belongs to Microsoft and already ships with Windows — it was never Roblox's to give away. And the 2008–2016 logo was custom lettering, so there's no original font file behind it at all.

What this page offers instead is the honest version: an image of your text in free lookalike fonts, generated in your browser and downloadable as PNG or SVG. And note the difference from a copy-paste text generator — pasted plain text always renders in whatever font the destination app uses, so the old look can only travel as an image. If what you actually want is to style your Roblox display name or bio with paste-safe characters, that's a different job: the Roblox font generator does it with bold, gothic, bubble, and other Unicode styles.
