A WhatsApp @username is 3 to 35 characters: lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores, with at least one letter somewhere. Nothing else gets in. Your Display Name and About text are untouched and still take any character you like, styled fonts included.
A username does not replace your phone number. WhatsApp still requires one to create and hold an account. What the handle buys you is that a new contact can reach you without seeing that number.

Those last two guardrails exist to stop a handle passing itself off as a web address. Check a candidate against the 3–35 rule in our character counter before you try it in the app.
Work down the table above. In practice one of six things is wrong: a character outside a-z0-9._; no letter anywhere in the name; a www. at the front; a domain-style ending; fewer than 3 or more than 35 characters; or somebody already has it.
Blank-name and spacer tricks do not work here either. The field demands a real letter and rejects everything outside its character set, so the approaches on our invisible character page stop at this box. They still work on your Display Name.
WhatsApp has three text fields, and only the newest one is strict. Paste ꧁𝓔𝓶𝓶𝓪꧂ into the @username box and it bounces. Put it in your Display Name and it works exactly as it always has.
Discord, Instagram and Roblox split their name fields the same way: a locked plain-text handle underneath a display layer that takes anything. The mistake is always the same one, pasting a decorated name into the strict field instead of the free one.

WhatsApp gave the country-by-country window itself, so a reserved username that has not switched on yet has not been missed.
There is no username directory and no discovery search, so a handle only works when the other person already knows it. It is closer to a Discord handle than to a searchable social profile. If WhatsApp adds one, or changes the character rules, this page changes with it.
