Omani Rial Sign

The Omani rial sign (⃄, U+20C4) is the Central Bank of Oman's official currency symbol, presented to the public on November 19, 2025, timed around Oman's National Day. Its design is built from stylized Arabic letters — ʿayn (ع) and rāʾ (ر), the first and third letters of the word "rial," crossed by two lines in the style shared by many modern currency symbols. Central Bank Governor Ahmed bin Jafar Al-Musallami framed the adoption as a strategic move to strengthen Oman's standing as a regional financial hub and make the rial easier to identify on international, commercial, and digital platforms. It was submitted for Unicode encoding alongside the UAE dirham and Maldivian rufiyaa signs, and as of this writing carries "white" status in Unicode's own pipeline documentation — frozen for publication, pending only ISO approval, with final publication expected alongside the rest of Unicode 18.0 in September 2026. No operating system, font, or keyboard currently ships native support. The one practical option that exists today is a business-software module (an Odoo ERP app) that embeds a font to render the symbol for companies that need it now — a narrower, more utilitarian equivalent to the open-source developer tooling already built around the UAE dirham sign.
