The Omani rial sign (, U+20C4) is the Central Bank of Oman's official currency symbol, presented to the public on November 19, 2025, timed around Oman's National Day. Its design is built from two stylized Arabic letters crossed by two lines, in the style many modern currency symbols share: ʿayn (ع), the first letter of عماني (Omani), and rāʾ (ر), the first letter of ريال (rial). Central Bank Governor Ahmed bin Jafar Al-Musallami framed the adoption as a strategic move to strengthen Oman's standing as a regional financial hub and make the rial easier to identify on international, commercial, and digital platforms. It was submitted for Unicode encoding alongside the UAE dirham and Maldivian rufiyaa signs, and Unicode 18.0 published it as final on September 16, 2026, as U+20C4 OMANI RIAL SIGN. As of September 25, 2026, no operating system, system font, or keyboard ships native support. Two practical routes exist in the meantime. The Central Bank publishes the sign as SVG, PNG and EPS artwork with usage guidelines, which covers an invoice template, a price list or a printed sign. Businesses running Odoo can install an ERP module that embeds a font, so the symbol renders across invoices, reports, the customer portal and point-of-sale receipts. Neither replaces the character: only U+20C4 can be searched, sorted or pasted.

The Omani rial isn't the only new currency symbol in Unicode 18.0: two more currencies got their own signs in the same release.
Saudi Arabia's riyal sign cleared this same path a full Unicode version sooner: final since Unicode 17.0, and on Windows 11's Arabic keyboards since December 2025.

Unicode 18.0's publication on September 16, 2026, with this character as U+20C4 OMANI RIAL SIGN, is confirmed by the Unicode Consortium's Unicode 18.0 announcement. Microsoft's KB5070311 release notes document the Saudi riyal sign's arrival on Windows 11 keyboards.
