The Virgo symbol (♍, U+264D) is a stylized letter M with a looped tail, most often read as a maiden holding a sheaf of wheat — and Virgo is the only sign of the twelve personified as a woman. The figure is most commonly identified with Astraea, the virgin goddess of justice and daughter of Zeus and Themis (the goddess of divine order). Astraea lived among mortals during the Golden Age, but as humanity turned wicked through the Silver and Bronze Ages the gods abandoned earth one by one; Astraea was the last to leave, ascending to become the constellation Virgo — still holding the scales that became neighboring Libra. Some traditions instead identify Virgo with Demeter or Persephone. Virgo runs August 23–September 22, is ruled by Mercury, and is an Earth sign with Mutable modality.
