The Cancer symbol (♋, U+264B) is drawn as two curled crab claws — a glyph so stylized that many people read it as a sideways ‘69’ or a pair of interlocking commas. Its myth comes from the Twelve Labors of Heracles: during his second labor, the fight against the many-headed Lernaean Hydra, the goddess Hera — who despised Heracles — sent a giant crab to hinder him. The crab pinched his foot, and Heracles crushed it underfoot. To honor its effort, Hera set the crab among the stars as Cancer, in a notably dim patch of sky. Cancer is also the only zodiac sign ruled by the Moon (☽), making it — alongside Sun-ruled Leo — one of just two signs governed by a luminary rather than a planet. It runs June 21–July 22, is a Water sign with Cardinal modality, and begins at the June solstice that gave the Tropic of Cancer its name.
