The Aries symbol (♈, U+2648) is drawn as a pair of curved ram's horns, and Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. The myth behind it is the origin of the Golden Fleece: a winged, golden-fleeced ram — Chrysomallos in Greek — was sent to rescue Phrixus and his sister Helle, two children their stepmother had schemed to have sacrificed. As the ram flew them across the sea, Helle lost her grip and fell, drowning at the strait still called the Hellespont (‘Sea of Helle’) in her memory. Phrixus reached Colchis safely, sacrificed the ram in gratitude, and dedicated its golden fleece there — the very fleece that generations later became the prize Jason and the Argonauts sailed east to claim. The ram itself was set among the stars as the constellation Aries. Aries runs March 21–April 19, is ruled by Mars, and is a Fire sign with Cardinal modality.
