Snapchat Symbols

Ghost, sparkle, fire, and heart symbols to decorate your Snapchat name and captions, plus a plain-English guide to what the streak fire, hourglass, and friend emoji badges actually mean. Click any symbol to copy it instantly.

Snapchat culture runs on two different kinds of symbols. The first is the copy-paste kind — ghosts 👻, sparkles ✨, fire 🔥, and hearts that people add to a display name, bio, or caption to make it stand out, all free to grab below. The second is Snapchat's own Friend Emoji system — the small badges next to a friend's name that track your Snapstreak, show how deep a best-friendship runs, and flag new friends and birthdays. This page covers both: a full copy-paste symbol set first, then an honest explainer of how the Friend Emoji badges work. That system is customizable, so treat it as the long-standing classic default rather than a fixed chart, and check your own Settings > Friend Emojis for your current set.

What Snapchat's Friend Emoji Badges Mean

Next to some of your friends' names in Snapchat's chat and friends list, you'll see one or more small emoji badges. These are Friend Emojis — Snapchat's shorthand for streaks, best-friend status, and a few other relationship markers. The exact set is customizable (Settings > Manage > Friend Emojis lets you turn the whole feature off or hand-pick which emoji represents which status), so what follows describes the long-standing core mechanics rather than a fixed, permanent chart. Check your own Settings > Friend Emojis for the set you're currently seeing.

The clearest badge is the streak: a fire emoji 🔥 appears next to a friend you and Snapchat both agree you've snapped back and forth with on consecutive days, and the number beside it counts how many days the streak has run. When a streak is close to expiring, an hourglass ⌛ appears as a nudge to send a Snap before it resets to zero.

Best-friend status shows up as a heart. It starts once two people are each other's number-one best friend — the person each of you snaps the most — and the heart's color deepens the longer that mutual #1 status holds, moving through a short color progression rather than staying static. The exact colors and thresholds are part of the same customizable system, so the Snapchat heart colors page covers that progression, and its caveats, in full.

A few other badges round out the system: a distinct icon shows up when you and a friend share a mutual best friend in common, a new-friend indicator marks someone you started snapping with recently, and a birthday indicator flags a friend's birthday on the day itself.

FAQ

Snapchat symbols, answered

Do Snapchat symbols work in the username field?

No. Snapchat usernames are restricted to plain ASCII letters, numbers, periods, underscores, and hyphens, so emoji and Unicode symbols like the ones on this page won't save. Your display name, bio, chat messages, and Snap captions accept them fine — for a fully styled display name (bold, cursive, and other Unicode fonts plus decorations), use the Snapchat font generator instead.

Why didn't my symbol save in my bio?

Usually it's one of three things: the field silently strips characters it doesn't support (rare for emoji, more common for rarer Unicode symbols), the app needs to be closed and reopened for the change to sync, or the symbol was copied with an invisible character attached that broke the paste. Try copying the symbol fresh from a tile above and pasting it alone first to confirm it saves.

What do the Snapchat friend emojis mean?

They're status badges next to a friend's name — a fire 🔥 with a number for your Snapstreak, an hourglass ⌛ when a streak is about to expire, a heart that changes color the longer you've been each other's #1 best friend, plus badges for a mutual best friend, a new friend, and a birthday. See the Friend Emoji System section above for the full explainer, and the Snapchat heart colors page for the heart-color progression specifically. The set is customizable in Settings > Friend Emojis, so yours may not match a friend's exactly.
