Unicode’s moon signs come from two separate worlds. ☽ and ☾ belong to the astronomical symbol set, where they sit beside the planet signs: technical notation, single-colour, in use for centuries in almanacs and ephemerides. The moon-phase emoji 🌑 to 🌘 arrived only with the emoji set and show the moon as a picture. In practice, for an astrology or astronomy text the single-colour signs are right, and for a bio or a message the emoji are. Both mean the same thing, but they speak in different registers.
