Enter a character count below — from an essay limit, an application form, or a platform cap — and see roughly how many words it holds. Every estimate assumes characters with spaces (how almost every limit counts) and is shown as an honest range, because English words vary in length. Already have the text? Paste it into the character counter for the exact count instead of an estimate.

Characters to words, answered
How many words is 1,000 characters?
About 140–170 English words. The average English word is ~4.7 letters plus the space after it, so 1,000 characters including spaces holds roughly 150 words of ordinary prose — fewer with long words, more with short ones.
How many words is 2,000 characters?
About 290–330 words — a bit over half a single-spaced page. This is also exactly one maxed-out Discord message.
How many words is 4,000 characters?
About 570–670 words, or roughly 1.3 single-spaced pages. 4,000 characters is the UCAS personal statement limit — and UCAS counts a line break as 2 characters and also enforces a 47-line cap, so a statement that fits in Word can still be rejected. Draft to about 3,600 characters to be safe.
Do the characters include spaces?
Yes — every conversion on this page assumes characters counted with spaces, because that is how almost every platform limit and submission form counts. If your limit is characters without spaces, your text holds roughly 15–18% more words than the table shows.
Why is the answer a range and not one number?
Because words vary in length. Any converter that gives you a single exact number is guessing and hiding it; the honest answer for English prose is a range of about ±10%. To get the exact count for your actual text, paste it into the character counter, which counts the real thing instead of estimating.
