How do you change your TikTok username?

Direct steps, cooldown rules, and the real reasons TikTok says your new @handle is unavailable.

Quick answer

Profile → Edit profile → Username → type the new one → Save. You can only change your TikTok username once every 30 days.

Step-by-step: change your TikTok username

iOS and Android

  1. Open TikTok and tap Profile.
  2. Tap Edit profile.
  3. Tap Username.
  4. Enter your new handle using lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, or periods.
  5. Tap Save.

Desktop web: Open your profile settings in a browser, edit Username, and save. If web UI lags, the mobile app usually shows the updated state first.

Why your TikTok username won't change

The most common reason is the 30-day cooldown. After you change a username, TikTok blocks another change until cooldown expires.

Why TikTok says your username is not available

TikTok can reject a username for three real reasons:

  1. Already taken: someone already owns it, even if the account seems inactive.
  2. Reserved or blocked terms: some words are filtered or restricted.
  3. Your cooldown is still active: TikTok can show availability-style errors before cooldown ends.

A handle that shows no obvious profile is not guaranteed to be claimable.

Blank or invisible TikTok username: does it work?

The common trick is pasting an invisible Unicode character so the handle appears blank. It can work in some cases, but it is fragile.

Use it only if you accept inconsistent behavior.
